RetroBoard BBS itself is a new creation and definitely a work in progress.

The Sysop used to run multiple boards and frequented a lot of other BBS's back in the early 90's. RetroBoard BBS exists to be a place to slow down and relive the heyday of the BBS. With the current state of the internet (dead internet) and influx of AI and bot dominance, we feel people may flock back to alternate systems that are more human-centric, such as BBS's.

My journey with computers began in 1985 during my time in the US Army in South Korea, where I was introduced to programming on an IBM XT computer. This sparked a passion that only grew after my service when I lived with my dad in Missouri, fueling further interest. By 1990, I owned a Packard Bell 486DX, immersing myself in hardware and software, and venturing online with a 2400 baud modem. Starting with Prodigy, then CompuServe, I eventually discovered BBSs on America Online, which captivated me with their local communities.

In St. Louis, I explored many BBSs through "Fire Escape’s 314 BBS List" and became a regular on "Affinity," a vibrant multi-line board. My involvement led to deep friendships, including meeting my second wife and lifelong best friend. Inspired, I launched "L00ney T00nes BBS" as a sysop, which was a transformative experience, teaching me valuable skills in computing and networking and steering my career towards IT. I eventually became a data specialist at TCI Cable and now work as an IT Systems Analyst for the USDA.

My oldest son, born into this tech-savvy environment, is now a Linux DevOps professional. Reflecting on my BBS days, I've rekindled my love for these communities, finding solace in their personal touch amidst the overwhelming scale of modern social media. BBSs foster smaller, like-minded communities, offering a refreshing alternative to the impersonal nature of today's tech landscape.
